Funding and current status of the Friendship Bench Project

The Friendship Bench Project received a research grant from Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) in 2012 which enabled the study team to carry out a rigorous randomized control study approved by the local medical research authorities (MRCZ).

Grand Challenges Canada furthermore chose to empower the Friendship Bench Project with a scale up funding period of one year.

The scale up is currently underway with just recently having started the training of all lay health workers employed by the city health department of Harare. (February 2016)

The Friendship Bench Program will be rolled out in all Harare’s primary care clinics and in those of neighboring cities Chitungwiza and Gweru, totaling a number of 60 clinics, reaching out to 14,000 people coming to the clinics.
