Friendship Bench had the privilege of celebrating a milestone that goes beyond age - a celebration of wisdom, resilience, and the unyielding spirit that defines the core of what Friendship Bench is today. The 20th of January marked the 94th birthday of one of our dearest grandmothers, who has shaped the narratives of the community.

Born into a world that is very different from today, Gogo Hwiza has navigated history, carrying with her stories that go beyond time. Her life's journey is a reflection of the core values of Friendship Bench – empathy and connectedness. She has endured life's storms with grace and has been a source of strength for those seeking support on the bench.

Gogo Hwiza is one of the pioneer counsellors of Friendship Bench and she is the oldest grandmother. She joined Friendship Bench in 2006, when Prof Dixon Chibanda started Friendship Bench. She still provides talk therapy to people in her community in Mbare, Harare, ensuring safe spaces where people can share their stories without fear of judgement.

Her dedication to her community and country goes back to the 70s when she was actively involved in the struggle and played a crucial role in the planning and execution of the grenade attack of the BP Shell fuel depot of Salisbury- This marked the beginning of the end of Rhodesia.

In commemorating Gogo Hwiza’s 94 years, we are reminded that age is not just a number, it is a repository of experiences, lessons, and the enduring bonds that define a community. Friendship Bench is privileged to have such a wise and resilient soul in our midst, and we look forward to continuing the journey with Gogo Hwiza, drawing inspiration from her strength.

Happy 94th birthday Gogo Hwiza! May your days continue to be filled with love, joy, and the warmth of the community you have so profoundly impacted. We love you!

There is more to come on what went down on Gogo Hwiza's celebration :)

Wisdom has no age but age it self, has life experiences, that enriched the soul, to learn listening.

Thank you for you love, time and generosity !!!
